Thanks. It helped me get my frustrations out. I actually feel bad about how I talked to the woman trying to help me.

Still, we pay so much money to them a month, I think there should not be a week of down time. You think we'll get an account credit?

You know, I forgot to mention the best part about our new TiVo: we finally got rid of that stoopid DRV. It would frequently give record errors and get only seconds of a show; the interface was designed by monkeys; and it woudl record the same show overandoverandover again. Good riddance.

Yay! I never got over switching from TiVo - nothing else compares, and I'm glad it's back in our life! :-) I am excited about the NetFlix thing...with the new Wii & all this other fun techie stuff I don't think I'll have time to leave the house. ;-)

Another thing to be wary of is that most iPhones don't even come with insurane! So if you have you iPhone lost or stolen, you might need to make sure you have some good security software like iRedHanded installed... Not sure if there are any others like this yet, I'm running their beta and it's beautiful!

The Masonic trowel, to me, is clearly foreshadowing. This is a story about vengeance, pure and simple. The bitterness of Montresor stems from "as I once was". The mystery to me is what caused his financial and social collapse. I never tire of reading it and actually re-worked the themes for a story printed in a motorcycle club newsletter, centering around Ducati motorcycles.

if im not mistaken, many of Poe's stories are about one character trying to get to deep slumber and others in the story are aspects of their psyche, like "The Raven" and "Fall of the House of Usher." is this one any different? Now, im not certain this story is also about sleep, but here's a few things to roll around..
Montresor is wearing a black silk mask and roquelaire (cloak). Sounds a little like pajamas.. a robe and one of those sleeping masks?

Withdrawl is Poe's first sleep stage, entering the catacombs could be withdrawl..

Stage 2 is the hypnogogic stage, a blending of reality and dream, (not sure what in the story this relates to)

Stage 3- fantasy, or REM.. "His eyes flashed with a feirce light" eyes flashing could be REM.

Stage 4- deep slumber. perhaps fortunado's death? or maybe montresor fails to reach deep slumber?

perhaps Fortunado represents something within Montresor that he has repressed, walled up some emotion..

another quick thought.. Poe struggeled with alchoholism quite a bit, maybe he is alluding to his own desire to bury that side of himself

This is an interesting post. I've only seen the two movies, have yet to read the book, and I found them quite compelling. I'm aware of the premise of the book, and have read some of it, however, and it does seem Lem is one level removed from the two filmmakers. They want to maintain the humanity of it, and I think most of what Lem's writing is probably the same way, except the movies can't make their focus the inscrutability of Solaris, so they focus on this idea of the foreignness of others. It's miles above any of the sociopolitical sci-fi I've read, although some of it has been more sensitive, it tends to be all about schematization and making analogs to the current, and rarely questioning the state of affairs as much as giving it clarity. Good read, thanks.
